The history of Diamond Back BMX (1977–1984) is a specialized field of industrial design and manufacturing evolution. My mission with ROSDBBMX.UK is to provide a definitive, evidence-based archive for the "Old School" era, ensuring that the technical nuances of these iconic frames are preserved for the next generation of collectors.
My journey into the deep-tier restoration of Diamond Backs began in 2004. While browsing eBay, I came across a Centurion Pro-Star—a model that immediately connected me back to the bikes I rode in the 80s: the Pro-Star and the Silver Streak. After sourcing an original through a neighbour, that initial spark evolved into a 20-year obsession with documenting the "Black and Silver" era of Western States Imports (WSI) brand.
Unlike many enthusiast sites that rely on recycled internet rumours or copied content, my research is built on primary source material. Since 2006, I have maintained an original archive of factory pricing catalogs, model flyers, and brochures spanning the 1979–1984 period.
My most significant contributions to the BMX knowledge base include:
Decoding the "VM" Serial Logic: By tracing the history of Koizumi (originally a Vehicle Manufacturing fabricator) and consulting with former WSI staff, I was able to verify the "VM" prefix origins—a crucial piece of the Diamond Back puzzle.
Insider Documentation: My historical context is enriched by direct communication with relatives of senior Diamond Back employees, including the inner circle of the legendary Cozy Yamakoshi and Sandy Finkelman
Technical Geometry Mapping: Working alongside a small group of dedicated enthusiasts, I have spent thousands of hours cataloging serial numbers against frame geometry, specifically identifying the transitions in seat tube angles and dropout variation (2mm vs 3mm).
I have been a foundational member of the global old-school scene for over two decades:
Founder of OS-DB.net: I started the original Old School Diamond Back forum and reference site to centralize historical data.
Social Media Pioneer: I created the original Old School Diamond Back Facebook group, providing a platform for thousands of collectors.
Trusted Consultant: Since joining BMXmuseum.com in 2009 and frequently contributing to RADBMX.co.uk, I have been a go-to resource for identifying rare models and confirming frame originality.
I remain committed to protecting the brand from the "Bad Business" of mislabeled or replica frames. Whether through my Interactive Serial Decoder or direct advice to eBay sellers, my goal is to ensure that the legacy of Diamond Back, from Jere, Koizumi and Fairly fabricated Diamond Backs remains accurate and untainted.
